Miyakojima, Okinawa
is a city in Okinawa Prefecture, Japan, located on the Miyako Islands. As of 2012, it had a population of 54,908. The current mayor is Kazuyuki Zakimi, who took office on January 25, 2021. History The modern city of Miyakojima was established on October 1, 2005, from the merger of the old city of Hirara, the towns of Gusukube, Irabu and Shimoji, and the village of Ueno (all from Miyako District). As a result of the merger, Miyako District only has one remaining village. Geography Since the city was created by merging several towns that were located on different islands, the city of Miyakojima consists of multiple islands. Shimajiri District
is a district located in Okinawa Prefecture, Japan. Modern translation of Shimajiri means "Butt of the island" which may refer to its southerly position on the island of Okinawa. Compare this to Kunigami District, Okinawa. However, there are hundreds of geographic references throughout Japan and even into the northern Kuriles using "shiri", to approximate the ''Ainu'' word ''shir'', meaning ''island''. Despite Okinawa being so far south, historically Jōmon culture was dominant as on the mainland, and words likely have survived, though their original meanings have long been lost or modified. As of 2020, the district has an estimated population of 105,230 and the density of 447.98 persons per km2. The total area is 234.9 km2. The administrative divisions of the Ryukyu Kingdom were a hierarchy composed of districts, ''magiri'', cities, villages, and islands established by the Ryukyu Kingdom throughout the Ryukyu Islands. There were 57 throughout the kingdom including the Amami Islands.
